PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy offers a promising solution to accelerate healing of tendons, ligaments and other soft-tissues, and joint abnormalities naturally without significant risk. It is an emerging treatment with great promise.
The principle of therapy is based on platelets (long known as clotting cells), that when activated in the body, release healing proteins called growth factors. These growth factors speed up tissue and wound healing. Normally, our blood has 10% platelet composition, but in a PRP injection there is nearly 90% concentration of platelets.
Podiatric uses include achilles tendonitis, peroneal tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, recurrent ankle ligament sprains, partial tendon tears, and other ligament injuries.
The process involves drawing the patient’s own blood from the arm and using a centrifuge to separate out the platelets. This platelet rich sample is then injected into the injured area. Post-injection soreness is expected for a few days to upto 2 weeks. It is not to be used for a site of active infection or cancer.
For those concerned about having blood drawn, this technique can now be done with growth and repair factors donated from Amniotic Membrane and Umbilical Cord powder that is mixed with anesthetic and then injected directly into the site that is slow to heal and causing pain. This has worked so well, and usually one injection does the job with little to no recovery time!
