PRP Injections Q & A

What is PRP?

PRP is a regenerative medicine treatment in which a concentrated portion of your blood brings on natural healing. The platelets that clot your blood also release growth factors, regenerative proteins that accelerate tissue recovery and wound healing.

Under the usual circumstances, your blood contains only 10% platelets. But, through a special centrifuge process, Dr. Gandhi dramatically concentrates your platelets. In PRP injections, you’re getting about 90% platelets. This allows for rapid healing of tendon, ligament, and other soft tissue injuries.

What areas are PRP injections helpful for?

PRP injections can help with a number of different foot and ankle problems, such as:

  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Plantar fasciitis and other causes of heel pain
  • Recurring sprains
  • Tendon tears
  • Arthritis affecting feet and ankles

PRP can be incredibly effective for many kinds of damage in your feet and ankles, whether they’re related to sports injuries, wear-and-tear, age-related degeneration, or other causes. It works so well because it heals your damaged tissue to end the pain rather than medicating it or using other quick fixes.

How do PRP injections work?

During a PRP treatment, blood is drawn from your arm and processed in a centrifuge that rotates it at high speed. This motion separates your blood into different layers, allowing your platelets to be extracted from the solution. The PRP is then administered into the injured or painful area.

It’s normal to have some soreness for anywhere from a few days up to a couple of weeks after your PRP injections.

If you’re worried about the blood draw, there’s now another alternative to PRP injections. Dr. Gandhi can also use growth factors derived from powdered amniotic membrane and umbilical cord. This is mixed with anesthetic for a pain-free injection.

Dr. Gandhi performs both types of injections on-site at A Step Up Podiatry, LLC.

How many PRP injections do I need?

It depends on the condition and how severe your pain is. Many conditions require a series of treatment sessions. However, with the PRP alternative (the powdered amniotic membrane/umbilical cord/anesthetic solution), just one injection can give you excellent pain relief with little-to-no downtime.
