An Intro to Podiatry
When faced with a medical issue, it is important to know who to see for help with certain problems. If your eyesight isn’t quite what it used to be, you would likely see an optometrist. Should you find out that you have cancer, you will visit an oncologist. For conditions and problems affecting the feet and ankles, you can find the help you need from a podiatrist, like Dr. Sanjay Gandhi here at A Step Up Podiatry, LLC.
What is Podiatry?
This medical field is responsible for treating and preventing conditions that develop in the feet and ankles. Your foot and ankle are complex structures comprised of 26 bones, 33 different joints, and over 100 tendons, ligaments, and muscles in each one. On top of all that internal structure, they are covered by skin and nails. With all of these parts, it is easy to see how there can be many issues that a foot or ankle might experience.
Adding to the complex structure of each foot and ankle is the fact that these body parts are the basis for your entire body. Without them, you would be unable to stand, walk, run, and jump. It is easy not to give this much thought, but all of these activities place varying degrees of force and pressure on your lower appendages, which can contribute to the development of foot and ankle issues.
What Conditions Do Podiatrists Treat?
There are many specific conditions and injuries that these foot specialists can treat, but they fall into a few general categories, including:
Heel Pain – Many patients come to A Step Up Podiatry to receive treatment for heel pain. Some of the conditions that cause this pain include plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and Achilles tendinitis. In many cases, these issues are able to be treated with conservative care.
Sports Injuries – There is always a risk of injury that comes with physical activity, but the good news is that these injuries are treatable and many patients can eventually go back to favorite activities.
Diabetes – Individuals who live with diabetes have to give extra attention to foot care. This disease can lead to two conditions that, when combined, pose a risk for very serious medical conditions. When someone with diabetes has neuropathy and circulation issues, small wounds can quickly become big problems.
Skin and Nail Care – Ingrown toenails, fungal nails, dry skin, and corns and calluses are all conditions that may require professional treatment.
In addition to those categories, we also provide care for toe deformities, forefoot pain, and circulatory issues that affect feet and legs.
How Are Podiatrists Qualified?
A doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM) earns the advanced degree from an accredited college of podiatric medicine. In some cases, but not all, they are also certified to perform surgical procedures on toes, feet, and ankles. Podiatrists complete residencies with established hospitals and medical facilities to gain field experience.
Dr. Sanjay Gandhi at A Step Up Podiatry is fully board-certified in both general care and surgery.
What Kinds of Treatments Do Podiatrists Use?
Podiatric treatments generally fall into one of two categories – conservative care and surgical procedures. Conservative methods include custom orthotics, medication, exercises and stretches, casting and braces, and other such treatment options that do not require an invasive procedure.
Foot and ankle surgery is sometimes necessary to treat severe injuries or conditions that are progressive in nature. Progressive conditions can benefit from the use of nonsurgical care to address symptoms, but will not improve without the use of surgery. A good example of this is bunions. The pain can be managed with the use of medication, padding, and orthotic devices, but only a surgery can realign the bones correctly.
